Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-N.C., joined 21 other House Republicans as co-sponsor of a bill introduced by Rep. John Sullivan, R-Okla., saying that making individual Americans buy health insurance is unconstitutional.
Jones said that both U.S. Senate and U.S. House health care reform bills require citizens to purchase health coverage approved by the federal government and their bill was drafted in response.
“To force people to buy health insurance is completely unprecedented and unconstitutional,” Jones said. “I will continue to oppose any new proposal that contains individual mandates. I will not support the Democrats’ effort to shove government-run health care down the throats of the American people.
“The states are revolting against this proposal and rightfully so,” Jones added. More than 30 states have stood up for individual rights and state sovereignty and have begun constitutional amendments or statutes to ban government health insurance mandates.
